چکیده

The Central Plains of Western Canada comprise the Prairies Ecozone and the Boreal Plains Ecozone. The former has the most grasslands and is divided into seven ecoregions: Mixed Grassland, Cypress Upland, Moist Mixed Grassland, and Fescue Grassland in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan; Aspen Parkland, which extends in an arc from central Alberta and Saskatchewan southeast to southwestern Manitoba; and Lake Manitoba Plain and Southwest Manitoba Uplands, but grasslands are more abundant in the first six. The Boreal Plains Ecozone extends across central and northern Alberta and Saskatchewan and arcs southeast to western Manitoba. This ecozone is divided into 10 ecoregions, but only the Peace Lowland has significant grasslands. This chapter briefly describes the physiography, climate, soils, and prominent flora of six of the ecoregions in the Prairies Ecozone and one in the Boreal Plains Ecozone for the benefit of future biologists wishing to study the biota of

Prairie Dog Decline Reduces the Supply of Ecosystem Services and Leads to Desertification of Semiarid Grasslands

Anthropogenic impacts on North American grasslands, a highly endangered ecosystem, have led to declines of prairie dogs, a keystone species, over 98% of their historical range. While impacts of this loss on maintenance of grassland biodiversity have been widely documented, much less is known about the consequences on the supply of ecosystem services. Here we assessed the effect of prairie dogs ...

Arthropod Consumption by Small Mammals on Prairie Dog Colonies and Adjacent Ungrazed Mixed Grass Prairie in Western South Dakota

The percentage of arthropods and plants in the diets of seven small rodents captured on prairie dog colonies and adjacent mixed grasslands were estimated by microhistological techniques. Arthropod composition over the two year study averaged 51% and 37% on prairie dog colonies and mixed grasslands, respectively. Composition of arthropods on prairie dog colonies was greater during the summer tha...

Shrub Effects on Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor Fluxes Over Grasslands

Temperate grasslands are a species-rich ecosystem that may be important in mitigating the increase in atmospheric CO2. The effect of shrub invasion on CO2 fluxes in Northern Great Plains grasslands is not known. The objectives of this research were to determine CO2 and water vapor fluxes over a grazed mixed-grass prairie (prairie site) and a mixed-grass prairie that has extensive invasion of sh...

Evapotranspiration from Northern Semiarid Grasslands

Proper grazing management reduces ET from grasslands by reducing transpiration losses and grazingManagement of forage production for livestock grazing on semiarid induced surface energy relationships that reduce evapograsslands depends on water availability. Evapotranspiration (ET) ration (Svejcar and Christiansen, 1987; Wraith et al., was measured using the Bowen ratio energy balance method on...

Nebraska Sand Hills: The Last Prairie

Although North American grasslands are diverse and biotically rich, their conservation has never received high priority. As a result, the prairie landscape has all but disappeared. However, one prairie region has retained its essential pre-Columbian features. This is the Nebraska Sand Hills Prairie, a 4.8 million ha stabilized dune region of Holocene origin. Because the Sand Hills lie at the he...
